Pension Application for Jehiel Green

Steuben County SS.
            On this sixteenth day of October AD 1832, personally appeared in open court before the Court of Common Pleas of the said county of Steuben new sitting Jehiel Green, as resident of the Town of Howard in the said County of Steuben, land State of New York aged seventy one years and upwards who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.  That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated—
            That he was first drafted into the Militia of the State of New York some time in the Spring of the year 1779 at the town of Bedford in the County of Westchester in a company commanded by Captain Daniel Bouton belonging to the regiment commanded by Colonel Nathan Delavan—That at the time he was so drafted as aforesaid the said Regiment was divided into what were called classes which said classes alternately did duty for a regular period of times.  That he belonged to said company during the years 1779, 1780, and 1787.  That he was employed while in active service during that time in guarding the County from the attacks of small parties of British troops and Tories along the North River from Westchester County down the river to the British lines—That during that time he was engaged in actual service only part of the time—That whenever there was an alarm given a part of all of the Militia were called out to repel an attack or to punish depredations committed within the said county and were then permitted to return home until it became necessary to call them out again—That the part of the county into which he lived was very much exposed by its situation to the attacks of the marauding parties of the enemy and was very frequently attacked—That he was out in this quarter during the years aforesaid very frequently and was [?] out for three and four weeks at a time—That he was unable to state what particular length of time altogether he was engaged in this service under arms during the said years but from his best recollection he thinks he was so engaged at various times during the said time in the whole to make from twelve to fifteen months.—
            That about the first of April 1782 he enlisted at Bedford aforesaid where he then resided for the term of nine months that company commanded by a Captain Thomas Herter? With a Lieutenant Tuttle—That said company belonged to the Fourth New York Regiment commanded by a Colonel Wisenfelt.  That company to which he belonged did not remain with the said regiment during the said term of nine months but was stationed in the said County of Westchester for the purpose of guarding it from the attacks of parties of British and Tories—that during said time while he was with said company he was employed in a skirmish in the town of Salem with a pair of Tories in which he was wounded by the thrust of a bayonet through his arm.  That he continued in the said company engaged in the said County of Westchester until the expiration of the said term of nine months when he was discharged there from.—That he has no recollection of ever having received a written discharge and if he did so receive one he has lost it, that the only evidence of his said services which he has been able to procure is contained in the affidavits he this declaration annexed—
            That he was born at Bedford in the County of Westchester in the State of New York on the 27 November 1761—that he has no record of his age and knows the same only from his recollection of the information given to his by his parents—
            That after the close of the war he resided at Bedford aforesaid about one year then removed to Balltown Saratoga County where he resided about seventeen years, then removed to Ulyssus now Tompkins County where lived four or five years and from thence removed to Howard in the said county of Steuben where he has since continued to reside.
            That in his present neighborhood he is known to Rev’d Toule, William Goff, Simeon Bacon, Charles Graves, Daniel N. Bennett, Rev’d Joseph Jacobs, Hubbard W. Rathbun who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services as a soldier of the revolution—
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed) Jehiel Green

Reply to a letter of inquiry dated May 3, 1936:
            Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War records of Jehiel Green of Westchester County, New York, and of Luther Kerry, Cary, Karry of Washington County, Pennsylvania.
            The Revolutionary War records of this office have been searched and no claim for pension found based on the service of a Luther Kerry, who served from the State of Pennsylvania.  The surname was searched under similar spellings.
            The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in pension claim, W. 7556, based on the military service of Jehiel Green in the War of the Revolution.
            Jehiel Green was born November 27, 1761 in Bedford, Westchester County, New York.  The names o his parents were not stated.
            While residing in Bedford, New York, Jehiel Green enlisted in the spring of 1779, served as a private at various times, until sometime in 1781, guarding the country along the North River, under Capatin Daniel Bouton, and Colonel N. Delavan in the New York troops, length of entire service about fifteen months.  He enlisted about April 1, 1782, served nine months as private in Captain Thomas Hunt’s company in Colonel Weissenfels’ New Your regiment, and in a skirmish at Salem, was wounded by a bayonet thrust through his arm.
            Jehiel Green lived after the Revolution in Bedford, New York, about one year, then moved to Ballston, Saratoga County, lived seventeen years, moved to Ulysses, Tompkins County, lived about sixteen years, moved to Reading, Steuben County there four or five years, thence to Howard, Steuben County, New York.
            He was allowed pension on his application executed October 16, 1832, then living in Howard New York.
            He was living in Medina County, Ohio, in 1834, where he stated most of his children were living, he did not name the children then living in Ohio.
            Jehiel Green died September 27 or 28, in 1845.
            Jehiel Green married in Bedford, New York, in the month of January, “soon after Proclamation of Peace”, Esther Armstrong of said Bedford.  She was born October 2, 1763, place not stated, nor were the names of her parents given.
            The widow, Esther Green, was allowed pension on her application executed August 21, 1846, at which time she was living in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio.
            She was living in 1853, in Michigan, with her son, who had lately moved from Ohio to Michigan, name of son not designated.
            The following are the names of the children of Jehiel Green, and his wife, Esther, as shown in the claim:

            Their son, Caleb Green, was living in 1846 in Chatham, Ohio, and son Joseph Green, was living in 1863 in Lenawee, County, Michigan.

            Thomas Armstrong of Tompkins County, New York in 1832 stated that he was born in Bedford, New York, that he would be sixty-eight years of age in January, 1833, and was well acquainted with the soldier, Jehiel Green, and served with him in the nine months tour, during the Revolutionary War.  It was not shown that he was a relative of the widow, Esther Green.
